Medium Étempt: Bon Appétit's Panang Tofu Curry

It's amazing how many of Bon Appétit's main dishes are meat-based. And when I saw this one, it was just like in the pre-blog days when I wasn't seeing recipes in terms of the final picture match up. Back then, I just wanted to eat some delicious food. BUT, of course I still have to do the final picture match up because that's still really fun. I mean, I'm having fun right now.
their version:
my version:
(I really don't know why my color is so off. Too much turmeric?)

I started off with one smile of produce, substituting limes for the kaffir lime leaves the recipe called for.

There's not too much to show as far as this recipe's process, which was basically just chopping things and adding them to a pan, so let me take this time to show you the weird baby pepper that was inside of my red pepper:

Weird, right? I mean, it's green, too. Do red peppers start out green or is this just some freaky pepper that I could've sold on ebay for one million dollars?

I must say that before I added the red and white elements, it was looking sort of gross.

All in all though, this was a tasty, inexpensive meal that fed my roommate and I for days. For this latter fact alone, it would go under the label of success.

that baby pepper grossed me out and i kind of lost my attention span on the rest of the recipe. i just kept thinking of how every once in awhile you hear on the news about how science discovered some guy with a hairy ball of teeth or something growing in his stomach.

i am nauseous right now. thanks a lot, baby pepper.

WOW (impressed look). Your tofu dish looks so yummy.

Here I bought a sauce pack for Sauce for Mapo Tofu so as to skip all the seasonings! and i will try this friday after work.

I'm always creeped out by the baby peppers too ("5 year old carries her own twin!") so I toss them, but I wanted to respond to your do red peppers start out green question. All peppers start out green, then turn their ultimate color if left on the plant long enough. Every green pepper would become red if it was left to ripen on the vine (Okay, I know about yellow, orange, etc., substitute those colors for red if you like). So essentially green peppers are unripe peppers, which is why they give so many people digestive issues! Unless I very specifically want that green pepper flavor, I always use ripe red peppers instead.

Keep up the good work, I love your blog!
